THE NAME

Lum-Aira

/luːmˈeɪ.rə/

Illumination without judgement.

Lum speaks to illumination: revealing hidden patterns, surfacing overlooked insights and bringing clarity to complexity.

Aira speaks to elevation: creating the space to step back, see the broader system and understand how decisions, behaviours and outcomes connect. Aira is the invisible space between.

Together, Lum-aira is the practice of making the invisible visible, without rushing to blame, simplify or prescribe.

THE PRACTICE
It’s not rocket science.

How many times have you said that as you’ve walked away from another category briefing, or supplier meeting?

The solution does not have to be difficult, but it does need to be practical, fit for purpose and repeatable; designing out the human-factor risks so it is easier to do the right thing, the first time, than the work around because its quick.

Managing risk in your value chain should be invisible, not a separate process that is completed after the fact; and if it isn’t, then it is a design problem, not a compliance problem.

How I support you is by walking the process you already have, understanding the outcomes of those steps, and tracing the path they create; following each control to the point where it stops matching how the work is really done.

Where it stops matching, is where the potential exposure appears, and it is the part that I redesign so your exposure is addressed, and harm to the people in your value chain is caught.

WHAT WE ILLUMINATE

What changed when we asked a different question

Every one of these statements is the result of someone challenging the accepted framing.

Questionnaires don’t create visibility.A supplier is not a labour model.Workers don’t experience your policy. They experience your process.Good intentions are not controls.Questionnaires don’t create visibility.A supplier is not a labour model.Workers don’t experience your policy. They experience your process.Good intentions are not controls.
Exposure hides in the space in between.
Lum-aira focuses on the relationships and interactions between the boxes; the things that hide in plain sight, cause the problem but are completely overlooked.

THE WORK

We'll walk the process and system you already have…

Trace the control path

Every organisation has controls. Few can see how they work together. We trace the connections that shape outcomes, behaviour and exposure.

Video editing

Clean, engaging edits crafted to tell your story with precision and purpose.

Map the exposure

The challenge isn't finding more information. It's understanding how existing information connects. We identify where exposure becomes visible.

Redesign the decision

Most outcomes can be traced back to a decision. We reshape the moments that influence behaviour, judgement and action.

Build the controls in

The strongest controls are rarely visible. The strongest controls are rarely visible. We weave them into the way work happens, creating impact without burden.

Ready the board

Boards don't need more information. We deliver clearer sightlines to the decisions, assumptions to the exposures that matter most.

Stand it up to scrutiny

Trust grows when words, decisions and evidence tell the same story. We design the traceability that allows the evidence to speak for itself.

HOW I WORK

HOW I WORK

The goal isn't to prove who's right.

It's to understand what's really happening.

The goal isn't to prove who's right.

It's to understand what's really happening.

Step 01

Diagnose

See clearly.

Illuminate the connections, assumptions and conditions, shaping predictable outcomes.

Step 02

Design

Think differently.

Challenge accepted thinking; and redesign the decisions that matter.

Step 03

Defend

Act with confidence.

Build the evidence, trust and assurance; that allow the work to speak for itself.

IN THEIR WORDS

Trust creates the space to ask

The most valuable insights are often hiding behind the questions nobody wants to ask. Trust creates the space to ask them.

“I had the pleasure of working with Ruth during a major procurement process with a Tier 1 international mining company. Ruth is a true subject matter expert when it comes to Modern Slavery and Human Rights, with a depth of knowledge and passion that is genuinely rare to find. What sets Ruth apart is her consultative approach. Rather than simply identifying gaps, she worked alongside us as a valued partner, helping us better understand the challenges and expectations in this space. Her guidance helped us strengthen our framework and confidently demonstrate our commitment to these important issues throughout the tender process. Ruth is passionate about helping suppliers improve and mature their understanding, rather than excluding organisations that have a strong offering but are still on the journey. Her practical advice, support and commitment to achieving better outcomes for everyone made a significant difference to our business, and I would not hesitate to recommend her.”

JeremyGeneral Manager Mining · National Workforce Solutions Company

“We are a non-profit that works on labour and human rights. We have worked with Ruth several times on ground-breaking product development. The insights she provides are valuable, practical, outside-of-the-box. She has the ability to distil and extract golden nuggets from vast amounts of information. She is always professional, accessible, and clear. We love working with her!”

MarieDirector · Global Labour and Human Rights Consultancy

"Shining a light on Modern Slavery risk when it still exists in plain sight As a multinational supplier participating in a major labour hire tender, we had the opportunity to experience Ruth’s approach to supplier engagement firsthand. Her style was candid, thoughtful and deeply professional. While her feedback was rigorous and, at times, challenging, it was always delivered with genuine intent and a clear desire to help businesses improve through open dialogue and authentic partnerships. What stood out most was Ruth’s ability to ask the difficult questions while maintaining trust, respect and clarity. She challenged our thinking in ways that prompted meaningful reflection, particularly around modern slavery and broader social responsibility risks. Her observations brought attention to risks that had previously gone unrecognised and encouraged important conversations at an executive level about how we could strengthen our approach. The outcome was a more robust and actionable strategy, but perhaps more importantly, a shift in mindset. Ruth’s influence extended beyond the tender process itself, shaping how we think about risk to people, compliance and client expectations across our wider business. Her ability to combine commercial acumen with genuine care for outcomes leaves a lasting impression and strengthens the relationships she builds with stakeholders and partners alike.

QUESTIONS

The questions behind the uncertainty

Often point us towards the conversations worth having.

Our modern slavery statement is already lodged. Why look again?

Because a statement describes what you intended to do. The real question is whether the system still supports it today.

Which of our suppliers are the risky ones?

We work in a high-risk sector, but this is not our area. Where do we start?

What happens if we actually find something?

Does this mean more questionnaires?

We are not a mining company. Is this still for us?

Ruth Furber
ABOUT RUTH

I have spent much of my career helping organisations navigate complexity.

Not by making things more complicated, but by helping people make sense of what is already there.

Clients often come looking for answers.

More often, they leave with a different question.

Because the challenge is rarely a lack of effort, commitment or intent.

It’s usually a matter of visibility.

Of seeing the connections between decisions, systems, people and outcomes that were previously considered in isolation.

The answer is often already in the room.

My job is to help find it.
